Kanchanpur residents block road over unmet 12 demands

Agartala, 18th June 2024:  In a determined stand against poor road conditions, residents of Kanchanpur sub-division launched an indefinite road blockade on Tuesday, led by the Kanchanpur Deo Valley Development Forum. The protest began at 9:30 AM at the old motor stand near Kalibari, with participants demanding urgent road repairs among eleven critical issues.

Despite initial delays, the sub-divisional administration, led by DC Anant Kumar Das, engaged in negotiations three hours into the blockade. However, the first round of talks failed to yield a solution. Subsequently, officials from the central construction company joined the discussions at Kanchanpur Kalibari Nat Mandap. Promises were made to restore traffic flow within a week, leading to the temporary suspension of the blockade.

Continuous rainfall did not deter the demonstrators, highlighting the urgency of their plight. The Pecharthal-Kanchanpur road, a crucial lifeline, has been severely impacted by heavy rains, reducing large sections to muddy, impassable stretches. The deteriorating conditions have disrupted essential goods transport and posed significant risks to small vehicles and emergency medical services.

The blockade underscored the absence of administrative action and support from local representatives. Residents criticized the unplanned roadwork by contractor JKM IMFRA WORK LLP and the lack of maintenance, which have exacerbated the situation. The Kanchanpur Deo Valley Development Forum has vowed to resume protests if their demands are not met promptly, urging the administration to take decisive action.
