Ker Puja: A timeless tradition of Tripura celebrated

Agartala, 3rd August 2024:   The vibrant state of Tripura is once again immersed in the age-old tradition of Ker Puja, a festival deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of the region. This sacred ritual, introduced by the erstwhile kings of Tripura, has been faithfully observed by the Janjati community for generations.

Ker Puja, believed to ward off diseases and protect against the malevolent gaze of enemies, is held 14 days after the Kharchi Puja. This year, as always, the ceremonial worship at Ujjayant Palace is being conducted with strict adherence to traditional protocols. The focal point of the puja is the Gandi, around which the rituals are centered.

A local priest elaborated on the significance of the festival, stating, “The Maharaja initiated this puja to ensure the well-being of the people of Tripura. It is performed to invoke happiness, peace, and prosperity for the community.”

The festivities will conclude at 5:00 AM on Sunday, marking the end of the puja. In recognition of this important cultural event, the state government has declared a public holiday on Saturday, allowing the people to fully participate in the celebrations.
