Lakshmipur residents ignite protests for road and drainage overhaul in Kailashahar

Agartala, 14th May 2024 :  In a determined plea for infrastructure improvement, the residents of Lakshmipur in Kailashahar took to the streets on Tuesday morning, creating blockades on the critical thoroughfares connecting Kailashahar and Tilla Bazar. The protestors, fueled by frustration, set tires ablaze to draw attention to their demands for immediate road renovation and the construction of essential drainage systems.

“After days of relentless rain, our homes are submerged, and our streets are in ruins,” said a local resident, whose name has been withheld for privacy. “We’ve knocked on every door, from the village panchayat to the district magistrate, yet our plight remains unheard.”

The agitation comes in the wake of severe waterlogging that has plagued the Lakshmipur area, leaving many villagers grappling with the consequences of inadequate drainage facilities. “It’s not just about inconvenience; it’s about our livelihoods,” another resident expressed under the condition of anonymity. “Without proper roads and drains, we’re cut off from the rest of the world every monsoon.”

The community’s outcry has been a long-standing one, with repeated appeals for the refurbishment of the deteriorated road in Nayapatan and the installation of water drainage systems. The protest signifies a tipping point for the locals, who now insist on a written commitment from the District Magistrate to address the issues.

“We will not move until our voices are heard and our demands are met,” affirmed a spokesperson for the protestors during the blockade. The residents remain steadfast, seeking the presence of the District Magistrate at the site to provide a written assurance that their grievances will be resolved.
