Land mafias torch home of 70-year old; Administration remains powerless

Date:

Agartala, 6th June 2026:   Allegations have surfaced that land mafias set fire to the house of a 70‑year‑old resident in East Jamtala, Chandrapur, near JB School. The victim, Subhash Bhowmik, has long been under pressure from local groups attempting to seize his land. Reports indicate repeated attacks and looting at his residence prior to this incident.

Firefighters managed to extinguish the blaze, but as of press time, no legal action had been initiated by the authorities. The elderly victim, visibly distressed, shared his ordeal with the media, pleading for administrative intervention. He stated that without strict measures against the accused, he has no chance of survival, as he can no longer stay in his own home.

Local sources allege that such activities are being carried out under the patronage of nationalist leaders, with mafias targeting innocent residents to capture their properties. Despite claims of “good governance,” residents argue that the administration remains powerless, leaving victims without justice.
