Agartala, 14th January 2025:   The vibrant festival of ‘Paush Sankranti’ was celebrated with great enthusiasm in the Lankamura area, as residents both young and old took to the streets in the early morning to chant the holy name of the Lord for the welfare of the country and society. This tradition deeply rooted in Bengali culture is one of the 13 festivals observed in the 12 months of the Bengali calendar.

Residents adorned their courtyards with beautiful Alpana designs and offered prayers with incense and flowers, setting the stage for a day of devotion and community spirit.

An elderly resident shared, “Every year, according to Hindu scriptures, we go out to collect loot while chanting Harinam Sankirtan. It’s a practice for the welfare of the country and society. This year is no exception; we are out again to uphold this tradition.”

On this holy day of Makar Sankranti, after organizing the pulley arrangements on their backs from early morning, women of all ages, from 8 to 80, carrying khols and brass cymbals, joined the Harinam Sankirtan in every neighborhood. The Lankamura area adjacent to the city was abuzz with activity. Young boys and girls, including school-aged children, enthusiastically participated in the Harir Lut Sankirtan, chanting and collecting loot.

“It’s a special day when everyone in the community joins the Harinam Sankirtan. We meet, exchange views, and celebrate together,” remarked another resident. Young boys and girls were seen happily filling their bags with traditional loot items such as tillai, batasa, kadma, oranges, and apples.

The chanting continued throughout the day and into the night, with groups moving from house to house. Many householders eagerly awaited their turn to host the chanting groups, contributing to a sense of unity and shared celebration within the locality.

The celebration of Paush Sankranti at Lankamura serves as a beautiful reminder of the rich cultural heritage and communal harmony that defines the region.
