Agartala 23rd July 2026 : Lawyers of Unakoti district expressed strong resentment following the death of advocate Biswajit Debbarma, alleging negligence by doctors. On Thursday, members of the legal fraternity staged a protest and gheraoed the office of Unakoti district’s in-charge Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Sandipan Bhattacharjee for nearly two hours. They also submitted a memorandum demanding action.
Advocate Biswajit Debbarma of Kailashahar court was critically injured in a bike accident at Betchhara area of Kumarghat on the evening of July 21. After receiving information from locals, fire service personnel rescued him and took him to Kumarghat Primary Health Centre, where he received initial treatment. Later, he was shifted to Unakoti District Hospital.
As his condition deteriorated, doctors referred him to Silchar Medical College Hospital. However, he died inside the ambulance near Dharmanagar while being taken to Silchar. He was later declared dead at Dharmanagar District Hospital.
Following the incident, lawyers have been alleging negligence in the treatment provided at Kumarghat Primary Health Centre and Unakoti District Hospital. During Thursday’s protest, Government Pleader and senior advocate Sandeep Debroy alleged that the deceased advocate did not receive proper emergency treatment and was not admitted promptly at the district hospital’s emergency department.
He also accused some doctors of misbehaviour and claimed that government healthcare services in the district lacked proper attention. Debroy further alleged that many government doctors were more focused on private practice rather than their official duties.
Referring to Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha’s decision regarding restrictions on private practice by government doctors at AGMC & GBP Hospital in Agartala, Debroy demanded that similar measures be implemented at Unakoti District Hospital as well.
He warned that if the administration failed to take visible action against the accused doctors within 45 days, lawyers would launch a larger movement across Tripura. He also stated that advocates may take to the streets wearing black coats as part of the protest.
