Agartala, 28th July 2025:    The CPIM’s Rajnagar Local Committee held a protest procession and public stand in Belonia today voicing strong opposition to rising electricity, gas and water tariffs, and demanding the cancellation of smart meter installations. The agitation also raised concerns about employment issues in the region.

Addressing the gathering, senior Left leader Sudhan Das launched a scathing attack on the BJP-led state government, alleging that the common people are being burdened by unjustified hikes and exploitative policies.

“During the Left Front government, Tripura had the lowest electricity tariff in the entire country. But since 2018, ever since the BJP came to power, the electricity rates have been climbing steadily. Today, the prices are skyrocketing,” Das said.

Das also criticized the smart meter initiative, calling it a tool of exploitation. “Under the guise of modernization, old electric meters are being removed and smart meters are being forced on people. The cost of these meters will ultimately be extracted from the public. This is nothing but looting in the name of technology,” he alleged.

The protest saw active participation from local residents and CPIM supporters, who raised slogans against the alleged financial burden imposed on the public by recent government policies. The speakers demanded an immediate rollback of the increased utility tariffs and scrapping of smart meter installations.
