Leftist groups protest in Agartala over evictions, civic issues; Submit memorandum to AMC

Date:

Agartala, 16th April 2026 :  Leftist groups staged a protest in Agartala today demanding a halt to eviction drives without prior rehabilitation and pressing for immediate improvement in civic amenities across the city.

The demonstration, organized by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) West Tripura District Committee, began with a procession that passed through several main roads before culminating in front of the Agartala Municipal Corporation office.

Protesters raised key demands including stopping evictions until alternative arrangements are ensured, repairing dilapidated roads and drainage systems, and providing adequate pollution-free drinking water across the corporation area.

Addressing the gathering, Left leader Ratan Das alleged that poor road conditions and a failing drainage system have worsened public suffering. He said even moderate rainfall leads to severe waterlogging, disrupting daily life and commute for residents. He also pointed to an ongoing crisis in the supply of clean drinking water in several parts of the city.

Das further accused the administration of failing to ensure basic civic services, including sanitation and cleanliness, for residents under the municipal corporation. He called for immediate remedial measures to address these pressing issues.

On the issue of eviction drives, he termed the practice of carrying out evictions without rehabilitation as inhumane, stressing that proper resettlement arrangements must precede any such action.

Following the protest, a delegation from the CPI(M) submitted a deputation to the Municipal Commissioner of the Agartala Municipal Corporation, formally placing their demands before the authorities.
