Agartala, 29th August 2025:   Four left-leaning student and youth organizations came together today to honor the martyrs of the historic food movement, commemorating the lives of Dilip, Tarun, Arvind, Rajeshwar, and Sumitra. The tribute ceremony was held at the Student-Youth Bhavan, where floral offerings were placed at the martyr’s memorial.

Speaking at the event, DYFI State Secretary Nabarun Deb reflected on the legacy of the 1966 food movement, which saw widespread mobilization across West Bengal under leftist leadership. “Dilip, Tarun, and Arvind were among the student activists who fell to police bullets under government orders,” Deb said. He also recalled the 1990 incident in Debdaru, where Rajeshwar and Sumitra were killed during a Congress-led coalition government.

The memorial event drew a large gathering of leaders and activists from the participating organizations, who paid their respects through garlanding and silent homage.

Deb emphasized that the sacrifices of these martyrs were not in vain. “Their struggle laid the foundation for today’s social movements. From the right to food, to education and employment—each democratic demand continues to be inspired by their legacy,” he said.

He also drew parallels to current movements across the country, where demands for food security, jobs, and education remain pressing. “Even today, the ideals of the food movement martyrs must guide the student and youth communities forward,” Deb urged.
