Agartala, 24th November 2023: In a display of frustration, local residents in the Poang Bari area blocked the main road from Jatanbari to Chelagang on Friday morning, demanding immediate repairs to the deteriorating road and overdue of MNREGA wages. The road blockade, which lasted for several hours, resulted in a standstill of traffic, leaving numerous passengers and students stranded in their vehicles.
The approximately 8 km stretch of the main road leading to Chelagang has reportedly been in a state of disrepair for several years, contributing to the mounting grievances of the community. Simultaneously, allegations have surfaced that workers engaged in the MNREGA program have not received their rightful wages in the Poang Barii Panchayat.
In response to the unrest, authorities, including the Natunbazar police station and representatives from the Finance department, were present at the scene. Korbook Additional Rantosh Kumar Dev, Korbookk DCM Ariit Debbarma, and Naatunbazar Police Station SI Samir, along with other officials, rushed to the site to address the situation.
After negotiations, the road blockade was lifted on a verbal promise, signaling a temporary resolution to the issues raised by the community.
