Agartala, 8th January 2025 : Aiming to address a prolonged water crisis, local residents led by the women’s group blocked the Manu-Chailengta National Highway today bringing traffic to a complete halt. The protest stemmed from an acute shortage of drinking water that has plagued the area for over three months.
“The situation has become unbearable. We have repeatedly informed the authorities, including our MLA and the Water Resources Department, but our pleas have fallen on deaf ears,” said a local resident. “How long can we survive without this basic necessity? This protest is our last resort.”
According to reports, residents had previously notified the Director of the Water Resources Department about the dire situation. Despite assurances, no tangible action was taken to alleviate the crisis. Frustration and anger among the locals boiled over, prompting the women of the community to organize the blockade early in the morning.
“We had no choice but to take this step. It’s not just about inconvenience; it’s about survival. The authorities need to understand the gravity of our suffering,” stated a member of women’s group.
As traffic piled up on the highway, police officials arrived at the scene to negotiate with the protestors. After prolonged discussions and assurances from the authorities to address the issue promptly, the blockade was lifted, and traffic resumed.
Speaking to the media, a police officer said, “We understand the concerns of the residents. We have communicated their demands to the higher authorities and ensured them that the matter will be resolved soon.”
