Agartala, 20th July 2026 :Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury on Monday demanded a high-level judicial inquiry, headed by the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, into the death of Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag Dhankar, raising concerns over the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Dhankar was found unconscious inside his office chamber at the Police Headquarters in Agartala on Monday morning. He was immediately taken to GB Pant Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead.
The exact cause of death has not yet been officially confirmed. While preliminary reports suggest that the senior police officer may have died by suicide, authorities have not issued any formal statement regarding the circumstances of the incident. An investigation is underway.
Former Chief Minister Manik Sarkar and Leader of the Opposition Jitendra Chaudhury visited GB Pant Hospital following the news of Dhankar’s death.
Addressing reporters, Chaudhury described Dhankar as a dedicated and highly respected police officer who had served the state with integrity throughout his career. He recalled that Dhankar had begun his career as a Sub-Divisional Police Officer and went on to hold the state’s top policing post after handling several challenging assignments.
The Opposition leader urged the authorities to preserve the body until Dhankar’s son, who is travelling from Canada, arrives. He also stressed the need for an impartial judicial investigation to establish the facts behind the incident.
Chaudhury further alleged that increasing mental pressure and administrative challenges faced by IAS and IPS officers have affected their professional independence and dignity. “An officer of Dhankar’s stature could not have taken such a step under ordinary circumstances. Even if it is a case of suicide, the reasons behind it must be thoroughly investigated,” he said.
He also linked the incident to what he described as the deteriorating law-and-order situation in the state, claiming that it reflected a broader sense of insecurity. According to Chaudhury, the incident raises concerns about governance and public safety in Tripura.
