Agartala, 30th September 2024: In a major crackdown on drug smuggling, the Additional Sessions Court in Bishalgarh has sentenced a lorry driver to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment for his involvement in smuggling a large quantity of ganja. The court, presided over by Additional Sessions Judge George Debashish Kar, handed down the sentence on Monday.
The accused, Selvares, was arrested by the Bishalgarh Police on July 24 while attempting to smuggle 3,390 kg of ganja in a lorry bearing registration number TN 47 AT 4858. The contraband was reportedly being transported to foreign countries when the police intercepted the vehicle.
Following his arrest, the police registered a case under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. After thorough investigation and court proceedings, the judge found Selvares guilty and sentenced him to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment. In addition, the court imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on the accused, with a default sentence of one more year of rigorous imprisonment in case of non-payment of the fine.
