Main Accused in Minor Kidnapping Case Arrested After 18 Months on the Run

Date:

Agartala, 31st July 2026 : Police have arrested the prime accused in a kidnapping case registered at Sonamura Police Station after he remained absconding for nearly one and a half years. A local court on Thursday remanded the accused to 14 days of judicial custody.

According to police, the kidnapping case was registered in February 2024 following allegations that the accused, with the assistance of several relatives, forcibly abducted a minor girl from Sonamura subdivision and took her to Udaipur subdivision.

During the course of the investigation, police arrested several relatives of the accused for their alleged involvement in the case. However, the main accused had been evading arrest until he was recently apprehended. After completing the necessary legal formalities, police produced him before the court.

Police also informed that they have sought the court’s permission to invoke relevant provisions of the Prohibition of Child Marriage Act and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, in addition to the kidnapping charges, considering the nature of the case.

Issuing a strong warning, police said that strict legal action would be taken not only against those directly or indirectly involved in kidnapping and child marriage but also against anyone found encouraging or facilitating such offences.
