Main road blocked by locals, demand urgent repairs on Jatanbari-Karbook route

Agartala, 12th November 2024:   A severe public outcry took form on Tuesday as local residents staged a road blockade on the main route connecting Jatanbari and Karbook.

The demonstrators voiced their frustration over the deplorable state of the six-kilometer stretch between Korbook Nabjoypara and Sembua, Chelagang, which they say has become impassable. This road, last renovated in 2014, is a crucial link for the area’s six to seven thousand residents across numerous villages.

Years of neglect have left the road in a crumbling state, making even basic travel a daily ordeal. Villagers claim that since the road deteriorated, their pleas to the Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) have been met only with promises. “For six years, we’ve heard nothing but assurances that tenders are issued and work will start ‘soon,’” one protester said. “Yet, the road is still the same.”

Residents allege that local leaders offer empty promises during campaign visits, committing to fix the road but never following through. With access to essential services hindered, the situation has become a crisis, particularly for those needing emergency medical care, who cannot reach hospitals easily due to the road’s condition.

Police arrived at the protest site to pacify the crowd, yet were unable to provide any concrete solutions beyond reassurances. The protesters, however, remain firm in their demand for immediate action.
