Man Killed in Tripura Over Witchcraft Allegation; Key Accused Arrested

Agartala, 27th   November 2025:  Tripura Police have arrested two individuals for allegedly assaulting a 58-year-old man, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia, who later died from his injuries in the Kupilong area under Killa Police Station in Gomati District.

The victim had been accused by some villagers of practising witchcraft and black magic. He succumbed to his injuries on 26 November, two days after the assault.

Police officials confirmed that the arrested accused have been identified as Chandra Kumar Jamatia (58) and Kamala Devi Jamatia (48). Gomati District Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar visited the victim’s residence on Thursday to review the situation.

According to the SP, Jaban Bhakta Jamatia was forcibly taken from his house around midnight on 25 November. “He was allegedly beaten with rods and bamboo sticks by several villagers. Police reached the area after receiving information and rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite medical attention, he passed away the next day,” the SP stated.

The SP, accompanied by Udaipur SDPO Debanjali Roy, confirmed that a detailed investigation is underway. Police said several other suspects have already been identified, and more arrests are expected soon.
