Agartala, 18th March 2024 :  The arrival of watermelons, a quintessential summer delight, has marked the onset of the season in Agartala’s markets. With local production dwindling, the state has begun importing the fruit to meet the high demand. A prominent wholesaler from Maharajganj market revealed that watermelon cultivation within the state has seen a significant reduction due to the inability to grow the fruit consecutively on the same land.

Consequently, watermelons are now being sourced from Bengaluru to supply the state’s needs. The wholesale price for the imported watermelons ranges from Rs 30 to Rs 32 per kilogram, while retail prices hover between Rs 40 to Rs 45 per kilogram. Despite the importation, the demand for watermelons remains robust, with many consumers eagerly purchasing the fruit as a refreshing treat after a day’s work.

The taste and juiciness of the fruit have been well-received, and there is a general consensus that the prices are unlikely to fluctuate significantly in the near future.
