Agartala, 3rd September : A mass fish death in Ghotapukur pond has triggered widespread concern and speculation in the North Mura area of Charilam Aralia village under Bishalgarh police station. Residents woke up on Wednesday morning to find thousands of dead fish floating on the surface, turning the pond white and filling the surrounding area with a foul stench.
According to local sources, the pond spanning approximately two kanis roughly 0.66 acres was cultivated under the Eco Development Committee (EDC) of the Forest department by nine local youths. The estimated loss exceeds Rs 2.5 lakh, including fish fry and mature stock.
Speaking to the media personnel this afternoon, one of the cultivators Abu Jahan expressed deep anguish over the incident. “Had someone caught and eaten the fish, we wouldn’t have felt this pain. But poisoning the pond and killing innocent creatures is inhumane. God will deliver justice,” he said, visibly emotional.
While no official statement has been released regarding the cause, locals suspect foul play. Rumors are circulating that the poisoning may be linked to political tensions between ruling party factions in the area. However, no one has come forward publicly to confirm these claims.
