Agartala, 24th September 2024: The streets of Kanchanpur roared with the voices of protestors on Tuesday as the Kanchanpur sub-division Bouddha Samaj Kalyan Samiti organized a massive rally against the ongoing violence in Bangladesh. The protest was sparked by recent incidents of attacks on minorities, including murders and the vandalism of temples and Buddhist monasteries, following the fall of the Hasina government.
“The situation in Bangladesh is dire. We cannot stand by while our brothers and sisters are being targeted,” said Aniruddha Chakma, an entrepreneur and one of the speakers at the rally.
The rally began at 2 PM from the Sakya Moni Buddhist Bihar and wound its way through various routes in the city, culminating at Deshanayak Manch of Kanchanpur Old Motorized Netaji Club. Monks from various Buddhist monasteries, representatives of different organizations, and prominent local figures highlighted the severity of the situation in Bangladesh.
“Violence is being perpetrated with government support. We demand immediate action to protect the minorities,” stated Sujit Singh Barua, another speaker.
During the protest, a delegation of seven people, led by Chandra Gupta Barua, submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi, through the Kanchanpur Sub-Divisional Magistrate.
The memorandum included five key demands: Withdrawal of military rule from the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh; Immediate security measures for all minorities, including Buddhists, Hindus, and Christians in Bangladesh; Enforcement of the Bangladesh Chittagong Manual Act 1900 to protect the rights of tribal communities; Reconstruction of destroyed Hindu temples, monasteries, churches, and Buddhist temples at government expense; and Rebuilding of all houses that have been burned down.
“This claim certificate will be sent to the office of the Prime Minister of India,” confirmed a source from the sub-divisional office.
The protest in Kanchanpur reflects the growing concern and solidarity among the local community for the plight of minorities in Bangladesh.
