Agartala, 6th January 2024:   A group of workers under the MGNREGA staged a protest in Aralia Gram Panchayat on Saturday, accusing some officials of misappropriating funds and attendance records. The workers alleged that Maya Begum, who was in charge of taking pictures for work verification, was collecting 90 attendance accounts in the name of another person, Muslim Mia, who had not worked for 57 days. They also claimed that she was withdrawing the attendance of two cards belonging to the ward member Abdul Motaleb, who was also involved in the scam.

The workers said that they had confronted Maya Begum and the Gram Rozgar Sahayak (GRS) of the area, but they could not give any satisfactory explanation. They demanded an inquiry into the matter and the calculation of the remaining days of work that they were entitled to. According to them, out of 2056 days of work available in the area, only 1500 days of work were given to the workers.

The Gramin Vikas Adhikari (GVA) of the area, who had recently joined as a transfer, said that he was unaware of the situation and promised to take action against Maya Begum if the allegations were found to be true. He also assured the workers that he would look into their grievances and ensure that they get their due wages and workdays.
