Agartala, 8th July 2025: In an unexpected late-night move aimed at restoring discipline and safeguarding educational standards, Tripura Tribal Welfare Minister Bikash Debbarma conducted surprise inspections at two hostels in Agartala: Boys Bodhjung Tribal Hostel and Umakanta Academy Hostel.
These government-run institutions, known for nurturing students from remote tribal areas have recently come under scrutiny following complaints about deteriorating discipline and an unsafe environment. The Education department received several reports alleging an alarming rise in the entry of outsiders during evening hours, disrupting the academic atmosphere.
“This is not just about rules—it’s about the future of students who come here with dreams. If the support and facilities that the government is providing to build the future of the students are misused, then we will be forced to take strict action,” said Minister Debbarma during his visit.
Minister Debbarma interacted with students and hostel staff, noting several troubling observations. He found that the complaints were not unfounded: discipline had eroded, educational focus was slipping and external influences were intruding during critical study hours.
He expressed particular concern over the evenings, a time he believes should be reserved for academic focus. “If there is an influx of unruly youth from outside during hostel study hours, the students will be confused, and it will directly affect their future,” he warned.
Addressing the hostel supervisors directly, Debbarma issued a stern reminder: “Your responsibility is not only to be present but also to ensure the safety and educational environment of every student. There will be no negligence in discharging this responsibility.”
The minister announced that strict administrative measures would follow, including a complete ban on the entry of outsiders into the hostel premises. Any future violations, he said, would result in serious consequences.
The visit highlighted the state government’s broader commitment to protecting students and ensuring a disciplined, nurturing academic environment. “Hostels are not just shelters; they are extensions of the classroom. We cannot allow them to become playgrounds for disorder,” Debbarma added.
