Minister confirms 15-day fuel reserve, warns against panic buying and hoarding

Date:

Agartala, 14th May 2026:  Tripura’s Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Minister Sushanta Chowdhury has assured the public that the state currently holds adequate supplies of fuel and essential commodities, including a 15-day reserve of petrol and diesel.

Addressing concerns over long queues at petrol pumps across Agartala and nearby areas, the Minister said the situation appears to have been triggered by rumours and misinformation rather than any actual shortage. He explained that a review meeting was conducted with officials from the Food Department as well as representatives of IOCL, BPCL, HPCL, and Sub-Divisional Magistrates after sudden crowding was observed at fuel stations.

“Since morning, we noticed unusually long queues at petrol pumps. This seems to have been caused by uncertainty linked to developments in the Middle East. However, we want to clearly reassure everyone that there is no fuel shortage in the state,” Chowdhury said.

He added that Tripura has sufficient fuel reserves and a total of 149 petrol pumps are operating across the state. According to him, the current stock position is stable, with 15 days of fuel available, and no disruption in supply chains at present.

The Minister also urged citizens not to panic, stating that excessive rush is being driven by rumours. He cautioned that strict action would be taken against anyone involved in creating artificial scarcity or engaging in black marketing, including the imposition of heavy penalties.

Chowdhury further highlighted the availability of essential commodities under the Public Distribution System, noting that the state has rice stock for 84 days, wheat for 57 days, sugar for 28 days, lentils for 34 days, and salt for 7 days.He reiterated that there is no shortage of essential goods in either the open or regulated markets, and assured that the government will continue to monitor the situation closely and act against any attempts to disrupt supply or create panic.
