Agartala, 21st November 2024: A delegation of Health and Public Works departments led by Minister Tinku Roy visited the Unakoti District Hospital in Kailashahar to address the hospital’s long-standing service issues. The visit was prompted by continuous news reports highlighting the dire state of health services at the hospital, located in the Bhagaban Nagar area.
“The current situation at Unkoti District Hospital is unacceptable. We are here to make immediate improvements,” Minister Roy stated. The hospital has faced multiple challenges, including the closure of CT scan and oxygen plant services, a non-functional generic medicine counter, and the frequent absence of a pediatrician and other specialist doctors.
Accompanying the Minister were key officials such as State Health Department Secretary Kiran Gitte, Director Dr. Sanjib Debbarma, Unakoti District Magistrate Dilip Kumar Chakma, and Kailashahar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Pradeep Sarkar. The team first met with the Medical Superintendent, Dr. Rohan Pal and other hospital staff before inspecting the hospital’s facilities.
“There have been significant issues with electricity supply, with the hospital facing power cuts of five to six hours daily, despite having a generator that has been non-functional for a long time,” Secretary Gittye noted. The inspection revealed that the ICU, completed a year ago, is still not operational, and AC units and toilets have been out of service, exacerbating patient care challenges.
“The infrastructure will be overhauled very soon. CT scan services and the oxygen plant will be restarted shortly. We will also ensure that several specialist doctors are appointed to address the gaps in service delivery,” Minister Roy assured.
In response to questions about the Rajiv Gandhi Memorial Sub-Divisional Hospital, Minister Roy confirmed, “We are committed to improving health services there as well and will send specialist doctors within a few days.”
The visit has sparked hope among the local community for swift and effective improvements in their healthcare services.
