Agartala, 19th January 2026 : Under the initiative of the Kokborok Department of Sabroom Michael Madhusudan Dutta (MMD) College, 48th Koborok Day was celebrated today with a grand event at Swami Vivekananda Auditorium. The guests for the program were retired school inspector Daya Tripura from Rupaichhari, Sabroom, Goutam Tripura, President, College Alumni Association. The event was presided over by College Principal Dr. Anupam Guha along with professors and students.
At the beginning of the event, there was a colorful rally. The students participated in the rally from the main gate of the college to the National Highway at Damdama, Sabroom, dressed in traditional attire, and then continued from there to the college. The program commenced with the lighting of the auspicious lamp and inaugural song by the students.
During the event, guests explained the significance of the day, mentioning that Koborok was recognized as a government language in 1979. Every year on January 19th, the day is observed with cultural programs, language promotion activities, and honoring the identity and heritage of the indigenous Tripuri community. They emphasized that the day highlights the community’s self-identity and linguistic heritage, fostering unity and pride among people.
Other speakers, including Dr. Benjamin Darlong, Professor Ajay Debbarma, and Dr. Deepankar Deb, also shared their insights on the importance of the day. Dr. Anupam Guha stated that through celebrating this day, the culture and traditions of indigenous groups can be enriched and passed on to future generations.
The program also featured traditional dance, songs, and recitations, which captivated all present.
