Agartala, 8th January 2025 : The National Service Scheme (NSS) unit and Women’s Cell of Michael Madhusudan Datta College jointly organized an awareness program to prevent child marriage at Damdama, Sabroom No. 2 Jalefa Higher Secondary School todau. Child marriage is a violation of human rights. A concerted effort must be made to stop this illegal practice. As suggested by the World Health Organization, the main means of preventing child marriage are proper education of women, informing parents about the risks of child marriage and proper implementation of laws regarding the minimum age of marriage.
The impact of child marriage on girls is long term, especially in terms of health, education and social development. Pregnancy and childbirth are the main causes of death for women aged 15-19 years in the world today. Suffers from anemia and malnutrition also. Globally, rural girls are almost twice as likely to undergo child marriage as urban girls.
Dr. Prabir Bhowmik, assistant NSS programme officer, Coordinator of Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC) Dr. Sudeep Goswami, members of Women’s Cell Dr. Uma Begum, Dr. Mahua Chowdhury and other professors of the college along with teachers and students of the school were present in the programme.
Ranjit Majumder, Assistant Headmaster of the school presided over the programme. In the event, everyone discussed the role and importance of women in the society and said that the minimum age for legal marriage is 18 years, especially for girls. Reasons for child marriage include poverty, family condition and social pressure, regional customs, fear of remaining unmarried, illiteracy, self-perceived weakness and inability to provide for oneself. So it’s time to be aware and get educated in proper education to move forward equally.
The program also highlighted various legal facts to prevent child marriage. The interest of the students present in the program to know the correct information was noticeable. It is informed that more such initiatives will be taken by the college NSS unit and everyone is urged to be alert.
