Monsoon Woes: Incomplete Road Widening Project Leaves Sekerkot-Kanchanmala Stretch in Shambles

Agartala, 19th June 2025 :  The Sekerkot to Kanchanmala road has turned into a muddy quagmire, making movement of vehicles and pedestrians nearly impossible, thanks to the stalled road-widening work under the IOCL project. Locals are facing severe hardships, particularly during the ongoing monsoon season.

The road, which connects Sekerkot Tea Garden to Sekerkot Railway Station, falls under the Kamalasagar Assembly constituency. It was being widened as part of a contract awarded to a private construction company for the IOCL project. While the work began last year, it has been halted for several months, reportedly due to the rainy season.

Excavation carried out for the road-widening has left the surface loose and damaged. With the monsoon rains setting in, water has accumulated in large potholes, and the entire stretch has turned into slippery, slushy terrain. Commuters, especially those travelling from Sekerkot to Kanchanmala, are bearing the brunt of the situation.

Residents have voiced particular concern over the difficulties faced in emergency medical situations. “Referred patients from the Kanchanmala Primary Health Center are struggling to reach higher medical facilities as ambulances cannot navigate the muddy, waterlogged road,” said a local resident.

Frustrated by the inaction, several villagers approached the media on Thursday morning and demanded immediate repairs to make the road motorable. “If the road is not repaired soon, we will be compelled to take necessary steps to get our demands addressed,” a protester said, hinting at possible agitation.

Locals are now urging the authorities and the contracting agency to resume work and restore the road on a priority basis before the situation worsens further.
