MoS Pratima Bhoumik commends Sign Language Day 2023 celebrations

Agartala, September 23, 2023 – In a momentous celebration of “Sign Language Day 2023,” Union Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment, Pratima Bhoumik, expressed her enthusiasm at participating in the event organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPwD) and the Indian Sign Language Research and Training Center (ISLRTC) under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India.

Addressing the gathering at the prestigious Dr. Ambedkar International Center in New Delhi, Minister Bhoumik announced a series of groundbreaking initiatives aimed at empowering the Deaf community, referred to as “Deaf Divyangjan.” These initiatives include the launch of Video Relay Services (VRS), the introduction of an Indian Sign Language (ISL) Dictionary on the ministry’s website, Sign Videos elucidating Financial and Banking Terms, and a Basic ISL Course in Self-Learning Mode.

Expressing her gratitude to the dedicated officials of DEPwD and ISLRTC for their successful organization of the event, Minister Pratima Bhoumik emphasized their unwavering commitment to the vision of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Under his visionary leadership, they strive to reach all Divyangjan (specially-abled individuals) to create a more inclusive and capable India, a goal encapsulated in the slogan “Samaveshi Bharat – Saksham Bharat.”

This celebration of Sign Language Day 2023 marks a significant step forward in promoting inclusivity and empowerment for the Deaf community across the nation.
