Multi-faceted initiatives to boost fishermen’s income surrounding Dumbur lake: Sudhangshu Das

Agartala, July 12, 2023: Fisheries minister Sudhangshu Das on Wednesday said that there are 3032 fishermen in Ganda Twisa, popularly known as Gandacherra sub-division and their monthly income revolves around Rs 8,000 to Rs 14,000 per month.

Replying to a query raised by TIPRA Motha MLA Nandita Debbarma (Reang) on the third day of state assembly’s budget session, Fisheries minister Das said “Fish cultivation in Dumbur Lake remains off from July to September every year and government provides allowances of Rs 1000 to each fisherman during three months’ span.”

“Despite the large-size water body is under the jurisdiction of TTAADC, the state government has poured 24 lakh, 29 lakh and 22 lakh 40 thousand fishlings in this reservoir in 2020-21, 2021-22 and 2022-23 fiscal years, respectively”, he added.

Apart from this, the government has taken initiative through ‘Cage Culture’ in Dumbur Lake to increase the fishermen’s income. As of now, 1512 cages have been constructed in this lake and fish cultivation had started. Moreover, initiative has been taken by adopting pan-culture for fish cultivation on an experiment basis, Das told the house.

Fisheries minister also said “The Fisheries department of Ganda Twisa sub-division has also taken initiative for production of fishlings like Rui, Katal, Mrigel, Shing, Karpu, Tengra, etc. which are being cultivated in as many as 75 water bodies covering 10.32 hectares under Sharma Farm. Later, free fishlings were distributed among the fishermen of Dumbur lake. In the current FY, fishlings were distributed among 1769 families.”
