Agartala, 12th August 2026: Traffic congestion in Agartala has once again raised serious concerns after three to four ambulances were reportedly stuck in a traffic jam at IGM Choumuhani on Wednesday evening.
Traffic congestion in the capital city has reportedly worsened over the past several months, causing severe inconvenience to commuters. Roads that normally take around 30 minutes to travel are reportedly taking one-and-a-half to two hours during peak congestion, leaving commuters frustrated.
Several major stretches, including Shankar Choumuhani–Ker Choumuhani, Nagerjala–Melar Math, Post Office Choumuhani–Kaman Choumuhani and the Motor Stand area, have frequently witnessed heavy traffic congestion.
Questions have also been raised over traffic management in the city. Despite traffic personnel being deployed at various intersections, commuters allege that greater emphasis is being placed on collecting fines rather than managing traffic flow and assisting the public during congestion.
The situation becomes particularly frustrating when emergency vehicles such as ambulances are caught in traffic jams. The reported incident at IGM Choumuhani has once again highlighted the need for effective traffic management and ensuring clear passage for emergency services.
Commuters have also alleged that traffic movement is sometimes disrupted when vehicles carrying ministers and senior administrative officials pass through busy roads, with other vehicles being stopped to facilitate their movement.
Residents have urged the authorities to review the city’s traffic management system, ensure proper deployment of personnel at critical intersections and take immediate measures to prevent prolonged traffic congestion. They stressed that efficient traffic management is essential not only for commuters but also for emergency vehicles and public safety.
