Agartala, 25th January 2026 :  Eminent litterateur and educationist Naresh Chandra Dev Varma from Tripura has been conferred the Padma Shri Award 2026 in the field of Literature and Education in recognition of his lifelong dedication to the preservation and promotion of the Kokborok language.

A steadfast advocate of Kokborok, Varma has authored over 30 books in the indigenous language, significantly enriching its literary corpus. His work has played a crucial role in advancing Kokborok as an academic subject and strengthening its cultural standing in Tripura and beyond.

Varma has been actively involved in scholarly forums, literary seminars, and cultural discussions centered on Kokborok. He has consistently championed the use of Bangla or Devanagari scripts for the language, contributing to ongoing discourse on its standardisation and wider accessibility.

The prestigious honour recognises Varma’s sustained efforts in preserving linguistic heritage, nurturing indigenous literature, and empowering future generations through education.
