Agartala, October 15: The temporarily abandoned premises of the Bharat Chandra Nagar Block office have become a hub for drug dealers, posing a significant risk of vandalism to the old office and the nearby North Belonia School. Fortunately, both locations narrowly escaped destruction by fire, marking the second such incident in a month.
During the previous Left administration, the Bharat Chandra Nagar Block office was temporarily housed in some classrooms at North Belonia High School. Last year, they established a permanent office in the Manurmukh area, and operations moved to the new location.
However, the buildings at the North Belonia School remain abandoned, with doors and windows left wide open. This has created an opportunity for anti-social elements to gather, primarily drug-addicted youth. They have been known to congregate inside the premises to indulge in illicit activities.
In the most recent incident, several sacks were reportedly stacked inside the abandoned building and set ablaze, suggesting a deliberate act of vandalism. Onlookers and eyewitnesses suspected that the fire was intentionally caused. Prompt action by local residents, who immediately alerted the fire department, helped to contain the fire.
The concerned residents are now calling for the abandoned building to be secured and barricaded to prevent further incidents and to ensure the safety of the surrounding areas.
