Agartala, 6th November 2026 : In a significant step towards promoting chemical-free agriculture, natural farming is gaining momentum in Jubarajnagar agricultural subdivision, where farmers are increasingly adopting organic fertilizers and pesticides to protect soil health and produce safe, toxin-free crops.
According to Bikash Sharma, Sub-divisional Agricultural Supervisor of the Jubarajnagar Agriculture Department, natural farming is currently being practised across 350 hectares under seven clusters. This year, the initiative has been introduced in the Paschim Dewanpasha cluster, benefiting 125 farmers.
A major component of the initiative is the Bio-Input Resource Centre (BRC) at Paschim Dewanpasha, where women members of local Self-Help Groups (SHGs) are producing organic fertilizers and pesticides. The concerned Mega SHG has received a government grant of Rs 1 lakh to operate the centre.
Anjana Deb, an SHG member, has taken the lead in preparing natural agricultural inputs using cow dung, cow urine and leaves of neem, mango, custard apple and karanja trees. After receiving practical training from the Agriculture Department, she is producing traditional formulations such as Nimastra, Brahmastra, Agnastra, Jeevamrit and Beejamrit. These products are supplied to farmers at a subsidised rate of just Rs 9 per litre.
Anjana said the initiative has enabled her to reduce dependence on chemical inputs, improve farming practices and earn additional income, while benefiting other cultivators.
Sharma said organic mulching using dry leaves, straw and biodegradable waste is also being encouraged to retain soil moisture, improve fertility and promote earthworm growth. Regular soil testing and certification are being conducted through a designated agency to ensure produce quality.
Last year, 375 farmers across Balidum, Madhuban and Jaithang clusters benefited from natural farming. Encouraged by the results, the department aims to extend the initiative to every Gaon Sabha in Jubarajnagar and develop the subdivision into a model chemical-free agricultural zone.
