NE India logs its first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker surgery, 6th such in entire India: ILS Hospitals, Agartala

Agartala, 6th November 2025:  Department of Cardiology at ILS Hospital, Agartala in the North-East has performed the region’s first dual-chamber leadless pacemaker procedure, bringing a new era of minimally invasive heart care closer to home. The patient, a 64-year-old man living with multiple critical heart problems and complete heart block (a condition where electrical signals don’t travel properly through the heart), is stable and recovering well.

Cardiologists chose a leadless pacemaker system because it avoids the long wires (“leads”) and chest-pocket used in traditional pacemakers. Instead, tiny self-contained capsules are placed inside the heart through a vein in the leg. In a dual-chamber setup, one capsule supports the upper chamber (atrium) and the other supports the lower chamber (ventricle). The two communicate to keep the heartbeat in a natural, coordinated rhythm.

The procedure was completed through a small puncture in the groin, without a cut on the chest. The care team reported excellent pacing measurements in the operating room and no immediate complications. The patient began walking soon after and received instructions on simple puncture-site care and signs to watch for at home.

Why this is a big deal

First for the North-East; sixth in India: The milestone places the region on the national map for advanced cardiac pacing and means more patients can access this therapy without traveling far.

Smaller, simpler, fewer parts: With no chest pocket and no leads running through blood vessels, the system reduces the chances of lead breakage and pocket infections-issues that sometimes affect conventional pacemakers.

Faster recovery, more comfort: Many patients go home quickly, with minimal visible hardware and fewer activity restrictions after the initial recovery period.

What exactly is a leadless pacemaker?

A miniature pacemaker (about the size of a large vitamin capsule).

Delivered to the heart through a thin tube inserted in a leg vein.

Stays inside the heart wall and provides electrical pulses to keep the heart beating regularly.

“Dual-chamber” means there are two capsules, one for the top chamber and one for the bottom, working together to mimic the heart’s natural timing.

About Patient’s Condition

Complete heart block can cause extreme slowing of the heartbeat, dizziness, blackouts, and even life-threatening emergencies. Pacemakers are the standard treatment because they restore a safe, steady rhythm. For people with multiple health issues or higher infection risk, a leadless option can be especially attractive.
