Agartala, 9th October 2024: The North Eastern Students’ National Integration Movement (NESNIM), a flagship peace initiative of the Holy Cross Educational Foundation (HCEF), was inaugurated this evening at Holy Cross School, Agartala. NESNIM, now in its 14th edition, brings together around 600 students and 100 animators from 29 schools across Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura for three days of engagement and collaboration.
The event was officially opened by Shri. Animesh Debbarma, Hon’ble Minister for Forest, Science & Technology and Environment, Government of Tripura, in the presence of Most Rev. Lumen Monteiro, the Bishop of Agartala Diocese; Fr. K. J. Abraham, President of HCEF; Fr. George Jacob, CSC, Secretary of HCEF; Fr. Alfred D’Souza, Province Administrator; Fr. Jilson Tom, Principal of Holy Cross School, Agartala; and Fr. Agi Paul, Vice Principal of Holy Cross School.
In his keynote address, Minister Animesh Debbarma lauded the efforts of Holy Cross in promoting peace and harmony among students from diverse backgrounds. He emphasized the importance of initiatives like NESNIM in shaping responsible future leaders.
Started in 2001 as a response to the volatile political situation in the Northeast, NESNIM was born out of Holy Cross’s commitment to fostering peace, unity, and mutual respect. It was a time when the region, particularly Tripura, was affected by violence, including the tragic loss of Fr. Victor Crasta, who was killed in an ambush in 2000. Holy Cross believed that promoting peace through education could create a more harmonious society, with students leading the way.
Rooted in the educational philosophy of Blessed Basile Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross— “Educating both the Heart and Mind”—NESNIM aims to ensure the holistic development of students, cultivating values of respect for diversity and other-centeredness. While it began as a peace initiative, it has evolved into a platform for nurturing future leaders who understand the importance of unity and shared responsibility.
This year’s theme, “SMARTeens”—Smart, Mindful, Adventurous, Resilient Teens—focuses on qualities essential for today’s youth. As young people navigate increasing academic and social pressures, NESNIM seeks to build their mental wellness and resilience. Through various activities over the next three days, students will enhance these traits, which will help them thrive both in school and life.
The event continues until October 11, 2024, featuring a variety of sessions and activities aimed at fostering relationship, understanding, and leadership among students from diverse cultural backgrounds.
