Agartala, 8th November 2026 : The death of a newborn following a referral from Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital to GBP Hospital in Agartala has triggered serious allegations of medical negligence, with the grieving family accusing the hospital authorities of failing to provide timely and adequate medical attention.
According to family members, Rebika Tripura, wife of Joy Manik Tripura of Kamalakanta Para in Boro Pathari, Belonia, was admitted to Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital at around 10 AM on Saturday for delivery. The family alleged that despite the prolonged labour, proper medical supervision was not provided during the crucial hours and doctors initially insisted on attempting a normal delivery.
The relatives claimed that a doctor, identified by them as Arup Roy, arrived at around 5 PM. They further alleged that the delivery process failed to progress normally and that the newborn’s head had emerged before the situation turned critical. The baby was subsequently referred to GBP Hospital in Agartala. However, upon reaching the hospital on Saturday night, the attending doctor declared the newborn dead.
Expressing profound anguish, the family alleged that an earlier referral or timely medical intervention could potentially have saved the infant’s life. They also questioned why the patient was not referred to a better-equipped facility when complications became apparent.
A family member claimed that the doctor had earlier examined the final sonography report from the ninth month of pregnancy and assured them that a normal delivery was expected. Relying on that assurance, the family said they had not anticipated such a tragic outcome.
The relatives have demanded accountability and called for an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the newborn’s death. They also questioned the standard of maternal and newborn healthcare available at the sub-divisional hospital, expressing concern that patients in smaller and remote healthcare facilities could be even more vulnerable.
“This should never happen to another mother. We do not want any other family to experience what we are going through,” a grieving relative said, urging the authorities to take appropriate action.
The family has specifically raised questions about the medical decisions taken during the hours between the patient’s admission and the eventual referral.
