Agartala, 3rd November 2026 : Nine persons, comprising six men and three women, have been arrested in connection with the attack on Border Security Force (BSF) personnel at Ashabari village in Boxanagar under Sepahijala district on November 2, Superintendent of Police Bijoy Debbarma said on Tuesday.
Recounting the sequence of events, the SP said the incident unfolded at around 9 am when BSF personnel stationed along the international border were engaged in their routine duties. During surveillance of the border area, they detected a suspected smuggling operation and immediately moved to intercept those allegedly involved.
However, when the BSF personnel attempted to stop the activity, the situation quickly deteriorated into a confrontation. The suspected smugglers allegedly resorted to stone-pelting and attempted to attack the jawans. During the ensuing operation, the BSF personnel managed to seize a consignment of suspected ganja.
The SP further stated that those involved initially escaped from the scene but subsequently returned with additional persons. The group allegedly attempted to create an obstruction by blocking the road, further aggravating the situation.
The violence intensified when an Assistant Commandant of the BSF, along with other personnel, proceeded towards the location. The officer and his team were allegedly surrounded and brutally assaulted. Their weapons were also reportedly snatched during the attack.
Debbarma confirmed that two BSF constables and an Assistant Commandant sustained serious injuries in the incident. Following the assault, police and BSF personnel rushed to the spot, rescued the injured security personnel and ensured that they were immediately taken to a hospital for medical attention.
Strongly condemning the incident, the SP termed the attack extremely serious and unacceptable, stressing that any attempt to obstruct or assault personnel engaged in safeguarding the country’s international borders would be dealt with firmly.
He said the police had taken immediate cognisance of the incident, registered a case and launched a series of raids to apprehend those responsible.
“During the raids, we arrested nine persons, including six men and three women, who were directly involved in the attack. They will be produced before the court,” Debbarma said.
The SP reiterated that the investigation was underway and assured that no one involved in the assault would be spared, adding that all those found responsible would face action in accordance with the law.
