Agartala, 4th November 2026 : In a political setback to the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitish Dey, the sitting Vice-Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council, severed ties with the BJP over alleged continuous harassment by party leaders.
In a press conference held at Kailashahar Municipal Council on Wednesday, he expressed his grievances against BJP leaders and the party’s activities. Raising key organisational issues, he said that there was a lack of respect for honesty and political idealism within the BJP. He further alleged that party leaders did not value the work of dedicated members. Moreover, he claimed that commissioning practices had become rampant and that many were primarily driven by monetary interests. Citing an example, he said that the Kailashahar Mandal president was being prevented from functioning effectively due to political rivalry and was not receiving due respect in his capacity as Mandal president.
It is noteworthy that Nitish Dey, who came into the political limelight as a leader of Unnayan Mancha, had even won a seat during the Kailashahar Nagar Panchayat election before 2018. Observing his popularity, he was asked to join the BJP and contested as a BJP candidate during the 2028 Assembly election for the 53 Kailashahar Assembly Constituency. However, he lost the election. Later, he was elected twice as Vice-Chairperson of Kailashahar Municipal Council.
However, due to internal conflicts within KMC, he remained inactive and, on several occasions, publicly expressed his discontent with the standing
Chairperson, a development that reportedly did not go well for him.
This time, he was allegedly sidelined by party leaders and failed to secure a place in the list of candidates for the ensuing Municipal Council election.
Speaking to a media person, he said that selling vegetables in the open market to maintain his self-respect would be preferable to continuing in politics.
His decision to sever ties with the BJP has triggered fresh political speculation in Kailashahar. Political circles are abuzz with speculation that he and his followers may contest the ensuing election as Independents. If this materialises, the BJP could face a significant electoral challenge, as a possible division of its vote base may affect its prospects.
