Agartala, 26th October 2024:   Patients and their families were left in distress on Saturday morning as there was no doctor available in the emergency department of Melaghar sub-district hospital until 10 am. This alarming situation highlights the ongoing issues within district and sub-divisional hospitals in the state, which continue to suffer from a lack of adequate medical staff.

A patient’s family member, who had been waiting since eight in the morning, captured the situation on a mobile phone. “We have been standing in line for hours, but there is no doctor to attend to us. The other health workers present are helpless without the doctors,” the family member said.

The incident revealed that despite having a doctor in the outpatient department, the emergency department remained unattended. “There are many children in critical condition waiting in line, but no one seems to care,” another family member lamented.

The situation has led to severe criticism of the current government’s healthcare policies. “The government talks about creating a hub without doctors, but the reality are far from it. The condition of our hospitals is depressing,” a local resident remarked.

Some doctors are accused of neglecting their duties in pursuit of higher earnings. “This evasion of responsibility by doctors, along with the lack of attention from public representatives and ministers, is putting people’s lives at risk,” an observer noted.

There are increasing calls for accountability and action. “Doctors and public representatives receive huge salaries and allowances from public funds, yet they fail to inspect their areas and hospitals. This negligence cannot continue,” said a frustrated community member.

As the state grapples with these healthcare challenges, it is clear that urgent reforms and stricter oversight are needed to ensure that patients receive timely and adequate medical attention.
