North district judge sentences husband to 5 years in housewife’s death case

Agartala, September 22, 2023: In a significant legal development, the District and Sessions Judge, Angshuman Debbarma, has delivered a verdict in a case revolving around the tragic death of a housewife. The judgment involves the sentencing of the husband to five years in prison.

Public Prosecutor Partha Pal provided context for the case, stating that on July 22, 2017, Rebati Das, a housewife, tragically took her own life at her residence after enduring alleged abuse by her husband. At the time of her death, it was reported that she had children.

Subsequently, on July 24, 2017, Anil Das, the father of the deceased housewife, filed a formal complaint against her husband, Ripon Das, at the Kadamtala police station. The complaint invoked sections 498 and 306 of the Indian Penal Code, prompting the police to initiate an investigation. This legal proceeding proceeded to the court, where a total of 27 witnesses testified.

Following a thorough examination of the evidence and testimonies, Justice Angshuman Debbarma rendered the verdict, convicting Ripon Das, the husband, in the case. The judgment included a three-year sentence under section 498 and a five-year sentence under section 306, accompanied by an additional six months of imprisonment without the option to pay a fine of Rs 5,000 for each section.

The verdict serves as a significant development in this case, offering closure and justice for the family of the deceased housewife.
