Agartala, 22nd March 2025: The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI), Tripura State Committee has urged Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha to implement the Roman script for Kokborok in academic institutions, citing ongoing protests disrupting student life.
In a letter addressed to the Chief Minister, NSUI Tripura President Swarup Kumar Sil highlighted the indefinite strike demanding script reform. “The lack of a standardized script has created unnecessary hurdles for Kokborok-speaking students, hindering their education and cultural preservation,” Sil wrote.
Kokborok, a widely spoken indigenous language in Tripura, holds immense historical and cultural significance. However, students and scholars have long struggled due to the absence of a uniform script in academics. NSUI argues that adopting the Roman script will ensure smooth integration into the curriculum and unify language education.
“The ongoing strike has disrupted not just academics but also daily life. Immediate action is necessary to restore normalcy,” the letter stated, urging the government to address the issue.
NSUI has also forwarded the request to the Education Minister, the Department of Education, and the Kokborok Language Development Board. The student body hopes for swift intervention to resolve the crisis and promote Kokborok’s growth in Tripura.
