One lakh fish fingerlings released into Gomati River to boost livelihoods of local fishing folk

Agartala, 18th August 2025:  The state Fisheries department under the Prime Minister Matsya Sampada Yojana released one lakh fish fingerlings into the Gomati River near Maharani area today.

The initiative is part of an annual program aimed at strengthening the fisheries sector and was carried out with the active support of the Tripura Fisheries Department. At the event, Gomati Zilla Parishad Sabhadipati Debal Debroy and Matabari Panchayat Samiti Chairperson Shilpi Das along with senior officials from the department were present.

Speaking at the event, Sabhadipati Debroy emphasized the importance of such releases in sustaining the fishing community. “Every year, fingerlings are introduced into ponds, reservoirs, and rivers across the state. This year, one lakh fingerlings have been released into the Gomati River with the goal of empowering local fishers economically,” he said.

The program aims to ensure that traditional fishers can access healthy fish stocks in natural water bodies, thereby improving their income and promoting self-reliance through sustainable fishing practices.
