Agartala, 19th December 2025: The All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS), Tripura State Committee, has raised serious concerns over alleged illegal diversion of tea garden lands in West Tripura district. In a formal representation submitted to the District Magistrate and Collector, AIKS State Secretary Pabitra Kar warned that such violations could have grave consequences for plantation workers and the state’s agricultural economy.
Kar stated that several cases of land diversion have come to light, particularly in Taltala and Kalachhara tea gardens, which he said were in clear violation of Section 5(ii)(b) of the Tripura Land Revenue and Land Reforms Act, 1960.
“The illegal diversion of tea garden land will cause harmful effects for people engaged in tea plantation and production, as well as the agriculture-related economy of our state,” Kar emphasized in the representation.
The AIKS delegation urged the district administration to take immediate steps to halt such practices and safeguard the livelihood of thousands of workers dependent on tea cultivation.
The memorandum highlighted that tea gardens are not only vital for employment but also form a significant part of Tripura’s rural economy. Any diversion of land, Kar argued, would undermine both the sustainability of tea production and the socio-economic stability of plantation communities.
The District Magistrate has been requested to initiate strict measures to prevent further illegal diversion and ensure that tea garden lands remain protected under existing laws.
