Painter’s deadbody recovered after 36 hours from Muhuri river, family alleges negligence

Agartala, 8th May 2025:  A tragic incident took place late night of May 05 last when Arjun Das, a painter from Sukanta Colony, lost his life after jumping into the Muhuri river while allegedly being pursued by the police. Despite extensive search efforts by firefighters, personnel from the disaster management department, TSR 9th Battalion and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Das’ body was found floating in the river this morning.

The news of the recovery spread rapidly around 7 am drawing hundreds of people to the banks of the Muhuri river and the nearby bridge. Officials, upon confirming the recovery, alerted the NDRF team, who retrieved Das’ decomposed body from the water. The remains were immediately transported to the morgue at Belonia Sub-Divisional Hospital for an autopsy.

Emotions ran high as Das’ grieving family members gathered from the riverbank to the hospital, mourning their loss with heart-wrenching cries.

Meanwhile, the family has openly criticized the police, alleging negligence and lack of accountability in the events leading to Das’ demise. Authorities have yet to respond to these accusations.
