Parents reluctant to enroll children in North Chelagang School amid safety and infrastructure concerns

Agartala, 3rd September :  Parents in the ADC village of North Chelagang, including Samatal Para and Debi Chan Para, are increasingly unwilling to enroll their children in the local North Chelagang Higher Basic School, citing a deteriorating learning environment and lack of safety measures.

Despite having four teachers on staff, the school currently serves only 23 students. Residents attribute the low enrollment to the absence of a boundary wall, which they say has turned the school premises into a hotspot for antisocial activities. Locals allege that nearly every night, miscreants gather on school grounds to consume alcohol, leaving behind broken bottles and other litter. Such scenes, they argue, have a disturbing psychological impact on young students.

The school’s infrastructure is reportedly in disrepair. With only eight benches available, students from Classes III to V are forced to sit on the floor during lessons. “In an era of digital advancement, no child should have to study sitting on the ground,” said one concerned parent.

Although a school management committee exists, residents claim it has been rendered ineffective due to political favoritism within the ruling party. “The committee is dysfunctional and has failed to take any meaningful steps to improve the school’s condition,” said a local community leader.

Due to these persistent issues, many parents are opting to send their children to the distant Chlakaham Higher Secondary School, located nearly 1.5 to 2 kilometers away, despite the inconvenience.

Locals are urging the administration and ruling party representatives to take immediate steps to restore a safe and conducive learning environment. Without intervention, they fear the school will continue to lose relevance in the community.
