Patients family assaulted by security guards at GB

Agartala, 9th June 2024 :  A disturbing incident at GB Pant Hospital has left the family of a critically ill thalassemia patient feeling insecure and traumatized.

The altercation, involving the hospital’s security guards from SIS, has sparked concerns over patient safety and the conduct of security personnel in healthcare facilities.

Today, a thalassemia patient was brought to the medicine block of GB Hospital from central Dukli by his family members due to his deteriorating condition. Given the severity of the patient’s state, his family stayed by his side in the ward. However, the situation took a dramatic turn when female security guards from SIS allegedly confronted the patient’s family.

According to reports, the security guards demanded that the family members leave the ward, which is customary before the doctors’ rounds begin at 9:00 am. The guards’ insistence led to a heated exchange, culminating in the guards reportedly throwing the patient’s family out of the ward and confiscating the patient’s mobile phone. Following this, vulgar abuses were allegedly hurled at the family.

The altercation escalated when a young woman from the patient’s family was reportedly dragged out of the ward and beaten by the security guards as she protested. The patient’s family claimed that a group of 10 to 12 female security guards were involved in the physical assault.

In response, one of the female security guards alleged that the family members had violated the hospital’s rule, which requires the eviction of family members from wards at 8:30 am. This rule is intended to facilitate the doctors’ rounds. The guard further claimed that despite allowing two family members to stay due to the patient’s critical condition, another relative became agitated and allegedly assaulted five security personnel, including the supervisor, leading to the conflict.

The incident escalated to the point where the police had to intervene. Both the security guards and the patient’s family members were taken to the GB police outpost to file complaints. The police listened to statements from both sides and eventually issued a settlement message in an attempt to defuse the situation.

This incident has raised significant public outcry and concerns about the treatment of patients and their families in hospitals. The conduct of the SIS security guards, along with the hospital administration’s handling of the situation, is now under scrutiny.
