Agartala, 17th May 2024: A severe shortage of ambulances at Boxanagar Community Health Centre nearly cost a patient his life on Friday. At 11:30 am, Motaleb Mia, an elderly resident of Dakshinpara in Boxanagar arrived at the hospital suffering from acute respiratory distress. His family rushed him to the hospital in hopes of immediate treatment.
Upon examination, the attending physician recognized the gravity of Motaleb Mia’s condition and urgently referred him to Tripura Medical College at Dr BR Ambedkar Teaching Hospital, Hapania in Agartala for specialized care. However, the hospital’s single ambulance was unavailable, delaying the critical transfer.
Boxanagar Community Health Centre serves 12 Gram Panchayats and faces significant operational strain. The facility is grappling with severe shortages of essential medical equipment and staff. Oxygen supplies are inadequate, and the hospital lacks enough flow meters for oxygen cylinders. Additionally, there is a dire shortage of doctors and nurses.
The ambulance delay forced Motaleb Mia’s family to wait anxiously for 40 minutes. Eventually, they transported him to Hospital at Hapania in a private car, further endangering his health due to the delay.
This incident highlights the urgent need for improved healthcare infrastructure in Boxanagar. Local residents and healthcare professionals are calling for immediate action to address the critical shortages and ensure timely medical transfers in the future.
