PCC Chief urges tribals to move away from regional parties

Agartala, 20th January 2026 :  Pradesh Congress President Ashish Kumar Saha today called on the state’s tribal population to move away from regional parties and support national parties, particularly the Congress.

Speaking at a press conference at the Pradesh Congress office, he said that tribals have realized that relying on regional parties in the past has not served their interests.

“The slogans of Tipraland and Greater Tipraland have lost their appeal. Now, these regional parties are raising various demands at different times—like No-Compromise, Constitutional Demand, One Last Fight—just to save face,” Saha said.

He added that it is now time for people to turn to national parties and consider Congress as a viable alternative.

Saha also criticized the regional parties for sending mixed signals on official language demands. “One faction demands Kokborok in Devanagari script, while another wants it in Roman script. This is sheer hypocrisy. Congress, from the beginning, has consistently demanded Roman script,” he said.

He further questioned why regional parties continue to agitate despite official decisions, adding that tribals have understood that the BJP will not work for their development and regional parties will not support them. Ahead of the ADC elections, Congress is highlighting its past contributions to the tribal communities of Tripura.

Apart from tribal issues, Saha strongly condemned the Uttar Pradesh administration for halting the bathing procession of Jagat Guru Shankar Acharya in Prayagraj on Monday. “This is an insult to the Hindu nation and a sign of disrespect to revered Hindu saints,” he said, announcing that the Congress will organize protest programs across the country, including in Tripura on Wednesday.

He demanded the immediate removal of the District Magistrate who allegedly insulted Jagat Guru Shankar Acharya and urged action under the law against him. Saha also called for the removal of the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh.

The press conference was also attended by Tripura Pradesh Congress spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty.
