Agartala, 19th January 2026 : On the occasion of Kokborok Language Day, Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) Spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty extended greetings and congratulations to the indigenous communities and all sections of the people of Tripura.
Chakraborty recalled that on January 19, 1979, the state government officially recognized Kokborok as a state language and established a separate department for the development of other minority languages. He highlighted the historical journey of Kokborok, noting that the first grammar was written in 1898 by Daulat Ahmed, followed by another in 1899 by Radha Mohan Thakur—both using the Bengali script. Despite these efforts, the rulers of princely Tripura did not accord Kokborok its due status at the time.
“For a hundred years Kokborok was written in Bengali script, before a section of writers began using Roman script. Today, Kokborok is taught up to the university level,” Chakraborty said. He pointed out that repeated debates over the script were settled by the Pabitra Sarkar Commission, which recommended that the choice of script should rest with Kokborok-speaking people themselves.
Criticizing the present BJP-led “triple-engine government,” Chakraborty alleged that attempts are being made to impose Hindi under the guise of Devanagari script on Kokborok. “We strongly oppose this imposition,” he declared.
The PCC spokesperson further demanded that the 125th Constitutional Amendment be enacted to grant greater powers to the Autonomous District Council (ADC), introduce Roman script for Kokborok, and include the language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution.
