PCC observes Indira Gandhi’s 42nd death anniversary in Tripura

Date:

Agartala, 31st October 2026 : The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Saturday observed the 42nd death anniversary of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with solemn tributes and a mega blood donation camp across the state.

The commemorative programme began with the hoisting of the party flag at Congress Bhavan, followed by floral tributes to Indira Gandhi’s portrait. Congress leaders subsequently visited Gandhi Ghat to pay their respects to the former Prime Minister. A mega blood donation camp was also organised as part of the observance.

State Congress president Asish Kumar Saha, MLA Gopal Chandra Roy and several other senior party leaders and workers participated in the programmes. Similar commemorative activities were organised by the party’s district and block units, along with its affiliated organisations, including the State Seva Dal.

Addressing the gathering, PCC president Asish Kumar Saha described Indira Gandhi as India’s first woman Prime Minister and a globally renowned leader whose contributions to the nation would remain etched in the memories of generations.

“On the 42nd death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, we have gathered at our party headquarters, while similar programmes are being organised at district and block levels across the state. After the flag hoisting and floral tributes at Gandhi Ghat, we organised a blood donation camp. On behalf of the State Congress, I pay my deepest respects to her,” Saha said.

Highlighting Indira Gandhi’s role in safeguarding India’s sovereignty and supporting Bangladesh’s liberation struggle, Saha recalled how she stood firm despite international pressure, including opposition from the United States and China’s involvement.

He said Indira Gandhi overcame several international challenges and played a decisive role in supporting the people of Bangladesh in their struggle for independence. She also thwarted foreign conspiracies and worked to protect India’s unity and territorial integrity, he added.

Drawing a political parallel with the present situation, Saha said the country was facing several internal challenges, particularly concerning national and border security, which, he alleged, reflected the failures of the present leadership.

He further recalled that Indira Gandhi sacrificed her life while confronting extremist forces and asserted that her legacy of courage, determination and commitment to national unity would continue to inspire the people of India.

Indira Gandhi was assassinated on October 31, 1984, by two of her personal security guards at her residence in New Delhi. Her death anniversary is observed across the country as a day of remembrance and tribute to her contributions to the nation.
