Agartala, 3rd January 2026: The Tripura Pradesh Congress today observed the birth anniversary of social reformer and India’s first woman teacher, Savitribai Jyotirao Phule, with solemnity and respect. The commemorative programme was held at the Pradesh Congress Bhavan here, attended by party president Asish Kumar Saha, representatives of the Mahila Congress, and workers and supporters from various wings of the organization.
The event began with floral tributes and garlanding of Savitribai Phule’s portrait, followed by a discussion on her life and contributions. Speaking on the occasion, Ashish Kumar Saha highlighted Phule’s pioneering struggle in the 19th century against social prejudices, caste discrimination, and the oppression of women, noting that her fight remains equally relevant today.
Saha further emphasized that Savitribai, alongside her husband Jyotirao Phule, played a transformative role in expanding women’s education and reshaping Indian society. Despite facing hostility, humiliation, and obstacles, she remained steadfast in her mission to secure the right to education for girls, dedicating her life to the cause.
Congress leaders present at the programme described Savitribai Phule not only as an educationist but also as a symbol of social justice and equality. They stressed that it is the responsibility of the present generation to carry forward her ideals. The leadership also reiterated the party’s commitment to advancing women’s education, empowerment, and social equality in Tripura and across the country.
